For the origin of Thai flag, it was a plain red flag during the reign of King Narai the Great (1656-1688). During the reign of King Rama IV, Thailand signed more and more treaties with various Western powers. Realizing however, that plain red flags were used by several other countries as well, thus making it difficult to differentiate between them and the national flag, a white elephant was placed in the center, thereby creating a new national flag.

In 1917, King Vajiravudh-Rama VI refashioned the flag of Siam, replacing the white elephant on a red field standard with the contemporary tri-color. Although not an "official" interpretation of the Thai flag, the prevailing view is as follows: the central blue stripe represents the monarchy, the two white stripes are the Therevada Buddhist religion, and the outer red stripes represent the land or the nation.
